I'm an extension soils specialist working in Kansas and have received a request for help from a small airport that has many problems with their grass runways. Has anyone ever tried to change the soil texture before? In this case, they want to add sand in order to improve the soil texture and soil strength. Thanks for any help you can give me! I'm going to email Dr. Unruh at the University of Florida now. Thanks. DeAnn Presley

I have just recieved approval for my turf runway in Tennessee. The area was cultivated and planted in Bermuda last year for pasture and is too rough to use for a runway in it's current state.

Any advise on how best to grade, smooth and plant would be appreciated.

Regards

bill...i am about to begin ground prep for my turf rwy(2500X100)...the advice i get from the locals(farmers) involves bottom ploughing followed by harrow/drag to smooth and firm up the ground...my concern about this method is settling of the ground...a former landscaper suggested using a harley power rake because it is less invasive(deep) and i can also do the grading needed with it...i do need to move some dirt around for drainage and maybe some drain pipe also...my ground rolls some but is level enough(i've always wanted to maintain the basic topograghy)...the issue is roughness and drainage...we grow tall fescue on the area to be used for the rwy and the pasture that does now and will surround the rwy...i want to keep the fescue(after ground prep/reseed)...my soil varies in type across my land...lots of clay(red) to dark called buck tallow by the locals...any ideas/input?...i am located in chatham county, nc and my airstrip is "flying dove field" known as 22NC by the FAA...thanks...

BILL,
I STARTED MY RUNWAY IN 2003. 3300 X 130 TURF. I ASKED THE LOCAL FARMERS, GOLF COURSES AND TURF FERTILIZER COMPANY. I USE BERMUDA SAHARA BECAUSE OF OUR CLIMATE. I HAVE IT TESTED IN 2 PLACES EACH YEAR BY A SOIL TESTING LAB. A THROUGH TEST IS $14 PLUS SHIPPING OF TWO CUPS OD DIRT.
THE LAB SENDS BACK THE RESULTS PLUS THE RECOMMENDED BLEND OF MATERIAL TO SPREAD OUT. IS SPREAD OUT BY A SPECIAL TRUCK AND ONLY TAKES THEM ABOUT 15 MINUTES TO DO 9 ACRES.
IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY TO DO IT ANY OTHER WAY. THIS YEAR IT WILL BE ABOUT $1600 EACH FOR THE 3 APPLICATIONS.
