Marking unpaved runways

I came across a somewhat obscure group of FAA documents regarding Marking and Lighting of Unpaved Runways. Enclosed are the first few pages. The total package is about 80 pages. It is fairly complete and includes analysis and construction details.

Featured Airpark – Leisureland

Bremerton, Washington – The Puget Sound area of Washington State is one of this country’s most beautiful areas in which to live and it has a climate that is extremely pleasant. (Don’t believe all the stories about it raining in the Pacific Northwest all the time. There are a lot of overcast days, but not all that terribly much rain. And, even with the overcast there are usually good ceilings.)

Runway Classification Q&A

QUESTION: How are the runways on most residential airparks classified by the FAA? Public, private, restricted, etc.?

ANSWER: The majority of the residential airparks for which we have obtained information have asked FAA to list them as private. Many publicize themselves as private and landings are by prior permission only. Obviously these are attempts to minimize exposure to risk from nonresident pilots. Covenants of the development usually can spell out such things and they can be publicized throughout the area. Enforcing those restrictive covenants is something entirely different and difficult in most instances. Some states offer a lower tax rate on open areas like airports if the owner will list them as private-owned but open to the public. goes The tax break can be considerable, but you also lose some potential privacy.

Got a fuel tank on your property?

Did you install a fuel tank at your airpark home at one time or another? Did you buy a place with an underground tank? What is the size of that tank? Is that tank underground? Is it still there and in use? Is it simply in the ground, even if you aren’t using it any more.

If that tank is 1,000 gallons or less and on your private property for personal use, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations probably don’t apply to you. If it is over 1,000 gallons, even on your own grounds, all the regulations that apply to the corner gas station, probably do apply to you.

Arizona, Wisonsin projects

More and more people in the last year or so seem to be discovering the advantages of living on a residential airpark.

Perhaps the costs for hangars and tiedowns on public facilities has continued its upward spiral and available facilities at first-class airports is getting harder to find.

Lots of questions in buying / living on airport

Lots of questions in buying / living on airport

If you are considering buying a house or lot on a residential airport, or even if you already are associated with such a project, there are several issues that are somewhat different than the ones associated with a regular housing development.

One member of our association compiled a list of questions that he feels should be answered satisfactorily before making any residential airport purchase. They are equally pertinent for existing residents.
