James O’Neill from Fairbanks, Alaska application for a special-use permit to build a private airpark consisting of four homes and two runways in McNeal, Arizona (at the end of Davis Road) was unanimously denied by the Planning and Zoning Commission at a June 10 meeting.

Thirty-eight neighbors voiced strong opposition that included:

  • the 40-acre parcel wasn’t big enough,
  • spooked cattle, and
  • drug smuggling.

This just proves that most of the population is ignorant about general aviation. Drug smuggling? They ought to shut down those horse farms. Draft horses and even mules probably have a greater useful load than your average 2-seater GA aircraft – which means the animals have a greater potential for drug smuggling than the planes. And about 50% of aircraft at 500 feet are descending for final approach – when the power is pulled and the aircraft quieter than any other time in it’s flight. I grew up on a horse farm and our neighbor had several aircraft. Never once did our horses spook when he was only 200 or 300 feet over our heads. Those horses are more likely to spook at Arizona rattlesnakes, but they don’t need permission to slither around from the Planning and Zoning Commission. I’ll never live in Arizona, and I’ll never live at an airpark – but the ignorance displayed by the community is just plain dumbfounding.

  2. I would like to find this guy! We are having an absolute auction in Rodeo, NM on the other side of the Chiricahua Mountains. We have 80 acres with 2 houses and a hangar. Also available is an airpark complex with a cafe, 4 hangars, 2008 CAVCO and a greenhouse on 37 acres.

If anyone knows how to get a hold of James please let me know! Or, if anybody else is interested you can contact my office at 575-557-2242 or toll free
