A new FAA-certified Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS-3) is now online, as of March 21, 2025, at Cameron Park Airport (O61).
Publicly owned and used, the North Central California airport, also has an adjoining airpark with “residential through the fence” access. So not only the operators at O61 will benefit from the AWOS, but also the residents of the airpark.
Funding for the AWOS came from the Cameron Park Airport Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, via a successful fundraising campaign.
“This is a landmark improvement for our airport,” said Cameron Park Airport District President Mark Eagar. “Thanks to the passion and generosity of our aviation community, we now offer capabilities typically found at larger airports. This upgrade enhances safety, supports better flight planning, and helps put Cameron Park on the map for more aviators.”
The new AWOS-3 system is now integrated into the FAA weather network, offering pilots accurate, timely weather information directly from Cameron Park. It is also supplemented by real-time camera feeds—procured by the Foundation and installed by airport volunteers—that allow pilots to visually confirm field conditions before flight.
